Claire Meharg 'Liminal Places' Devon Open Studios
Abstract paintings and works on paper by Claire Meharg, part of Devon Studios referencing memories and feelings stirred by a sense of self and place, extracted from experienced surroundings, and elements of the natural or man-made world. The abstract paintings are an attempt to engage the viewer in a visual and compositional experience, not through a narrative but through the formal act of painting where colour planes suggest illusions of space and light, aligning work with memories, emotions and imagination. The works on paper ‘Tree Sense’ are a metaphoric and figurative expression of materiality and identity through the exploration of a wooded landscape. ‘Tree Sense’ is part of an ongoing project ‘Retracing the Ground’, longlisted for the John Ruskin Prize 2014, and exhibited at The Plough Arts Centre Exhibition 2015.
