PAINTER/ PRINTMAKER

Tim Salter

I worked as an art teacher from 1975 until I left  in 2002  to concentrate on developing my own work.

I have not lost my links with education and community work. I give private painting lessons, run a local evening class and have worked in our three local prisons with both prisoners and their families. Throughout my career I have also illustrated books and magazines, including material for community education projects and sex education material.

The main focus for my work has been reflections on our interactions with natural forms and landscapes. The work itself is often abstract and textural; a natural link between the printmaking (etching & collagraphs) and painting.

The work often follows a theme. “Conversations with Myself”, a title I borrowed from the jazz pianist  Bill Evans, in which each piece reflects
the conversation’s journey. The “Elements group” was inspired by the remnants of the ‘The People’s Palace’, East Berlin, during its demolition, and the "Modern Times" group was taken from the tracks on a Bob Dylan album. Much of my work reflects a growing fondness for the abstract painters of the fifties. However some pieces still retain references to the ancient structures left to us in the landscape.
