Sue Williamson
My work is about looking, contemplating and absorbing a sense of time and place. My present work is focussed upon translating my experiences and recreating them pictorially in order to convey sensations of moving through architectural spaces;from interior to exterior and from varying vantage points.  The interplay between light and shadow that occurs at differnt times of day; the highlighting of shapes and patterns;the subtlety and drama of colour changes brought about by fluctuating light on surface. These are the components of my work. I begin from first hand experiences and support my evolving ideas with reference to my photographs as well as the strong memories I have of my subject. Being in a place which inspires me is crucial and I have spent a lot of time visiting and revisiting those place that have made a lasting impression and evoked feelings of absorption and awe. The tangibility as well as the visibility of the evolution of civilization through the remains of buildings is what engages me. I am fascinated by the dramatic impact of extreme perspective as well as the scale of the places I study for my work and explore the use of overlays of multiple viewpoints to express sensations of journeying from one space to another. My training in sculpture has embedded my awareness of volume, space and surface and my many years as ateacher have accentuated the real need to look hard and to draw in order to understand and to formulate, develop and resolve my ideas and insights.
