BRITAIN'S GOT ARTISTS FINALIST 2012

Dramatic landscapes, twisted trees and stark portraits feature in my portfolio of work. I am drawn to capture the spirit of wild places, particularly of the South West. My landscapes are created with pastels and often have deeply contrasting passages of light, dark and colour. I spend time visiting the landscape I wish to paint, trying to absorb the atmosphere, then work intuitively in my studio, attempting to portray the drama of the landscape, rather than to produce a purely literal piece of work.

 

I have painted since my early years and in my twenties was lucky enough to find that people wanted to buy my work. I have spent many hours studying composition, form and drawing, but in 2009 I discovered pastels and I was hooked, because they are a vibrant, immediate mark-making tool that I feel allows expressive work.

 

In contrast, my tree drawings are exceptionally detailed, taking more than 200 hours each to complete and often figure trees that are decaying or deformed in some way.

 

My work is exhibited throughout the Southwest and in 2012 I became a finalist of Britain's Got Artists, exhibiting in Leeds Central Library.
