Home Page for Joanna Radford
Joanna Radford has lived in Devon since 1975, on Dartmoor since 1981. She was a member of Dartington Print Workshop, studying under Michael Honnor, until 2008. She has exhibited work in the South West. She is primarily a printmaker, but has developed this medium to make artists' books, very often as collaborative projects with other printmakers. She also makes books and commemorative albums to commission. Her work is informed by and inspired by her "other life" as a small holder, Dartmoor commoner and breeder of Dartmoor ponies and Shetland sheep. The image on the left is a woodcut of the view from the Moor above Hannaford Old House, inspired by a ride (on a Dartmoor pony) during Devon Open Studios last year.

I hand-shear my own Shetland Sheep, and used, until I made this book which uses images and words of instruction, to get stuck on the first shoulder, wondering what to do next....

I sat in a cafe in the rain in Clifden and drew as I drank my coffee. The image became a print in "Five Ladies Travelling": a collaborative book. Michael Longley let me use his poem "Primary Colours" to accompany the image.

| A fantastic year for rowan berries |

Woodcut: Our wet summer has produced an amazing crop of all berries: some have gone to make apple and rowanberry jelly, excellent with Shetland lamb...

| Three in One |

The three dimensional version of a book made to commemorate a journey in a Galway Hooker, the Ave Maria, to St Macdara's Island off the coast of Galway. I am emphatically not a sailor so it was fairly character building...but inspirational
