I first started working as an artist in 1986 when I got three commissions, one of which was paid. I studied and gained a BTec diploma at South Devon Technical college and then went on to do a mixed arts and history of ideas degree at Middlesex University. I lived in East London for 14 years. During this period I continued to work on paid and voluntary commissions and projects, at festivals and for personal commissions. As a result found myself working all over London on community projects and fine art shows and over a 10 year period produced more than 1,000 workshops for the community in art, architechture, and the environment, first as a volunteer, then as a paid assistant, then as workshop leader, then as a workshop co-ordinator and finally as a consultant and innovator at the forefront of community outreach projects in inner city London. Working full time as a paid artist was a very satisfying experience for me. I have been part of several group shows and self funded two solo shows before moving back down to Devon in 2003 for family commitments. This opportunity to do my first studio show is great as I can balance family and art life well as my studio is part of my new home in Salcombe. I will be attending a portrait-painting course this summer. This is a new subject for me and definitely a challenge and one I honestly think I avoided before as thought looking at people’s faces and drawing them too difficult. I actually find life drawing easier! This new work, however it turns out will be exhibited 'raw' along with previous paintings, photos, models, community project folders, for the Devon Open Studios 2009. I look forward to you visiting and feedback would be much appreciated.
