Home Page for Sara Downham Lotto

Sara's studio is perched high in the valley above the river Avon. Home and studio are full of examples of her paintings on paper and glass created over the last 20 years. In this time she has evolved her own unique style of mixed media collages, celebrating colour, surface and decorative abstract forms.

In the last few months Sara has made a conscious divergence from her earlier paintings on paper and started working on glass treated in the same way as the paper, building up layers of paint and varnish, scratching and scumbling. Instead of tearing or cutting, she deliberately breaks the glass, disassembles the shards and rearranges them into a new composition.

Sara trained as a painter at St Martins in London and Manchester Polytechnic. Having also gained an M.Phil in Art History at Glasgow University, she then went to Poland to paint for three years in the late 1980's on a British Council Post Graduate Scholarship. Her art lecturing has taken her to Art Colleges around the world and she currently runs art workshops in Devon schools.

 Abu Simbel II
DownhamLotto_Abu Simbel II.jpg Unscathed by the glitz of distant King's Valley .... rescued and resurrected stone by colossal stone from Lake Nasser's rising waters .... sits the gargantuan Abu Simbel.
 Forever Changing I
DownhamLotto_Forever Changing I.jpg Daily school runs along Devon lanes, blustery coastal walks on a day off or a run down to the river, views from the kids' bedroom windows ..... The same scenes repeat themselves day after day but are forever changing ..... recurring motifs that could be trees or textured fields, sheep on a hillside or glimpses of sea .... You can recognise them again and again even though they are seen under skies and light always on the move.

 Spirit of Kintyre
DownhamLotto_Spirit of Kintyre.jpg Part of a landscape series completed for an Edinburgh Festival exhibtion in the mid 1990's. I lived in Ediburgh for eight years, hugely in love with the landscape both in the borders in the north west. It was hard, therefor, for my work not to be directly influenced by the landscape. As a result, most of the paintings depict mountains and lochs.
 Glass Flower IV
DownhamLotto_Glass FlowerI 4.jpg One of the first examples of working on glass earlier this year. Note how integral the frame is to the rest of the piece.
 La Playa!
DownhamLotto_La Playa! 3.JPG A second, considerably larger glass painting.
